Britney Spears? disastrous performance Sunday night at MTV?s Video Music Awards was bad for her ? and worse for a lot of other people in Hollywood.

There will be a lot of finger-pointing Monday as Spears? flabby, bloated, incoherent showing is dissected over and over.

But the real person to blame has to be Spears? newish manager, Jeff Kwatinetz of The Firm.

Kwatinetz has already had a very bad year, nearly killing the career of original ?American Idol? star Kelly Clarkson by letting her ? or rather encouraging her ? to buck the advice of Clive Davis and release a terrible album against his wishes.

What followed was a series of public embarrassments including the cancellation of Clarkson?s tour and her firing of Kwatinetz. The album, "My December," went on to sell a fraction of the number Clarkson had sold previously.

As for Spears, her calamity has probably killed any great expectations for the Nov. 13 launch of her CD. Jive Records was no doubt hopeful that the VMA performance would stoke fires for a big release.

But Nov. 13 is also the release date for two other big names: Alicia Keys and Celine Dion. Considering Keys? magnificent showing Sunday night, she?s now certain to be the winner on Nov. 13 when she releases ?As I Am.?

Dion should have a respectable showing just from her core, older fans. But Spears ? who couldn?t sing so well in the first place and was at best a burlesque cheerleader in dancing ? has probably squandered a significant amount of her audience.

It?s not like the rest of the VMAs was any great moment in music history, either. For years, the show has demonstrated that the one-time Music Television Network is a showcase for unmemorable junk.

I don't think she looked bad at all. So maybe she's a few pounds overweight ( by who's standards?!! ) Give the girl a break. She is going through a tough time and I feel for her.
The show wasn't her best by a long shot and she shouldn't have done the show. Probably pressured into it before she was ready.
If you had people going at you constantly and it was all bad how would you deal?
She's been blessed in her career, yes.. but she is human and that is what tends to be forgotten.
Look at Owen Wilson?. Human, human,... just like the rest of us.
Try walking in their shoes.. Maybe you'll understand the pressure... as if she needs anymore.
Shaving your hair off shows theres a dam about to break.

I personally feel for her.. I see every day people like that. And I do my best to help them. And as far as her weight goes she looks just like my weight and I have a problem dealing with it. But everyone tells me I am not.. But it is all in how I feel.. Everyone needs to help her not make things worst for her... She is someones daughter, mother, sister. Give her and anyone else like her a break. I have been there I know.

Is that what's condsidered fat? No wonder so many young people are developing eating disorders when someone who looks - to me at any rate - to be of a healthy weight is described using words like 'flabby' and 'bloated'. We in the western world like to think that we set a good example to the world, but I think it's about time we dealt with this morbid fascination we have for people suffering from emotional and psychological distress. In Victorian London there was a mental institution called Bedlam where the mentally ill were put on display for the amusement of the paying public. We like to think we've progressed since then, but when I see the callous way young public figures are treated I'm not so sure.

Who is Sarah Silverman? I didn't see the ceremony, but apparently after Britney's performance she made the following remark: "Was that incredible? Britney Spears. Wow. She is amazing. She is 25-years-old and she's already accomplished everything she's going to accomplish in her life. It's mind blowing."

If a schoolkid were being treated like this, wouldn't we call it bullying? Why has cruelty become acceptable, while vulnerability is condemned?

WHY BRITNEY COULDN'T HACK IT

September 11, 2007 -- Britney Spears has no one to blame but herself for her disastrous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night. The lip-synching pop tart showed up for her big comeback late, unprepared and with a drink in her hand.

On Saturday, the day before the VMAs, Spears was scheduled to arrive at rehearsal at around 1 p.m. Our spy said, "She didn't even get to Las Vegas until 4:30 p.m. It was ridiculous . . . The production people at MTV were ******** out . . . Nobody can tell Britney what to do anymore. No one can control her. She is a mess."



To make matters worse, when she arrived in Vegas, Spears didn't go straight to rehearsals.

"She went to her hotel room and ordered a bunch of food and some frozen margaritas," the spy said. "She came down, like, an hour later with a frozen margarita in her hand."

When Spears preformed on Sunday, she stumbled a couple times and couldn't remember the words she was lip-syncing. She covered her mouth at one point but by the end of the song had simply given up any pretense of singing.

"The dance number was spectacular - without her," said our spy at rehearsal. "When the stand-in was rehearsing with the dancers, in the hours they were all waiting for her, it was amazing. Then Britney showed up and refused to do anything. The dancers were supposed to lift and twirl her in the air a few times, and that just wasn't going to happen. The more complicated dance moves had to be erased because she couldn't do them."

Meanwhile, Spears was agitated because she didn't like the outfit MTV had selected for her.

"MTV wanted her to wear a corset outfit. It would have looked great and covered a lot of things up, but she hated it and didn't think it was sexy enough."

Instead, Spears changed into a spangly bra-and-underwear outfit she'd brought with her that emphasized her weight gain over the last year.

MTV execs weren't the only ones worried about Spears' impending debacle. Another spy said, "The dancers were texting pals, asking them to pray for them. They were worried."

After Spears performed at the VMAs, she allegedly broke down in tears but then partied until 3 a.m. She changed outfits several times and again was photographed by paparazzi wearing no underwear.

i'm not a britney fan in the slightest but seriously what kind of society have we become? we love to watch others fail so we can complain about something and tear them down more. when she kills herself because of all this hate will that make you feel better? **** she was spotted later that night getting out of her car "commando" again too. so what. can you people get lives or does it make you feel better about yourselves to put down others. it was a performance on a stupid music awards show people. big deal.

the reason she didn't do a lot of dancing and seemed distracted was because she had just heard right before she went out what sarah silverman said about her kids and she was dancing on a broken heel.
